Today there are nearly a dozen wineries with cellar door outlets in the
Perth Hills.
A
few have cafes, most are run by the families who own them and all are
staffed
by
friendly, informative locals ready to share their knowledge and enthusiasm
with visitors.
The region came of age in 1998, when it was officially gazetted a
wine-growing region.
Major
varieties grown here are shiraz and chardonnay, while several producers are
making sparkling wines using traditional methode champenoise techniques.
Viognier,
too, is gaining popularity and does very well in the Hills.
The Perth Hills Wine Show is held each
September
and
offers the opportunity to not only try our growing range of award-winning
wines, but talk with the winemakers themselves.
Just off the scenic Mundaring Weir Road
between
the region’s main townships of Kalamunda and
Mundaring,
the
wine-growing sub-region of the Bickley & Carmel Valley
is home to seven Perth Hills cellar doors.
The
Bickley& Carmel Valley hosts its own
family-friendly Harvest Festival each
May,
featuring
wine, food, entertainment and a chance to explore the valley’s many other
attractions.
The
Hills are Alive festival in the Spring showcases the award winning
wines of the region,
and is a great
opportunity to spend some time with the winemakers
at one of their popular
workshops and really get acquainted with their products!
The
valley is also home to a growing range of accommodation
including
a country spa retreat, boutique bed & breakfasts and a vineyard offering
accommodation.
